HOW DOES A SPRAY TAN WORK??

Your body is sprayed with a solution that contains a certain percentage of DHA (DiHydroxyAcetone), a colourless sugar which reacts with the Amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours turns brown. DHA affects the top layer of skin only and does not absorb into the body or bloodstream.

We use the Aviva Labs range at Sol Tan Spraytan Salon.

The formula is
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Oil free
  • Fragrance free
  • Alcohol free
  • Fast Drying
  • Wont stain clothes
  • For men and women

After 5 hours you will have a natural (not orangey) looking tan.

We also have the 2 hour express tan solution if you want a super quick bronzed look.

We stock a range of pre-care and aftercare products to ensure you get the best results from your tan.

IS SPRAY TANNING SAFE?

It is the safest form of tanning available today! DHA has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973.

HOW LONG WILL MY SPRAY TAN LAST?

Your body constantly 'sloughs off dead skin cells.  Spray tanning only affects the outer layer of skin, so again, as your skin cells naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your spray tan should last 5-10 days, but longer if you look after your skin by moisturizing every day with a hydrating lotion. However, we cannot offer a guarantee that it will last 5-10 days as everyone’s skin type is different.

CAN ANYONE SPRAY TAN?

Most people are suitable to have a spray tan. We suggest that pregnant women in the first trimester, those with severe asthma or with very sensitive skin refrain from spray tanning or consult a physician before spray tanning. Spray tanning is ideal for those people who are unable to go into the sun. However, if you are still unsure, please contact us.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOUR TAN?

Make-up, lotions, perfumes and deodorants must be removed prior to your tan. If you neglect to remove these products they may react with the spray tan solution and cause blotchiness and green patches.

At Sol Tan Spraytan Salon we have made it as easy as possible for you to achieve a golden tan. A salon shower is available for your use prior to your appointment. Coming straight from work or the gym isn't a problem. We also provide you with soap and a towel.

Shaving and waxing should be done the day before your appointment to reduce the likelihood of your open pores being saturated with the tanning solution and causing brown spots.

You should also exfoliate your skin the day before your spray tanning appointment. This is to remove any dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Removing these dead cells before your treatment will help you achieve an even natural looking tan and also help to prolong the life of your tan.

Exfoliation can be done with a loofah/brush or you may choose to use the Aviva Labs Exfoliant which is available in store and can be used on future spray tans.

We also offer by appointment a luscious exfoliating treatment. You will be scrubbed from head to toe by one of our technicians. Not only is it a lovely way to relax but you will ensure you are maximising your skins potential for the best tan. A shower must follow the exfoliating treatment. Please see price list for time and cost of this treatment.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY SPRAY TAN?

You can wear as much or as little as you like. For men we would suggest wearing dark swim trunks or dark coloured boxer shorts. For women, we suggest wearing a dark bikini or dark bra and underwear. Disposable underwear must be worn by male clients. No exceptions.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER I SPRAY TAN?

Follow these simple rules to have your spray tan last as long as possible...
  • Wear loose dark coloured clothing and loose footwear after your spray tan. Preferably, do not wear a bra. Tight fitting clothing will encourage the spray tan solution to rub off before it has had the chance to penetrate and react with the skin. Cotton clothing is best as it is a light, natural fabric that doesn’t promote sweating.
  • Try not to rub or scratch your body as this can also remove the spray tan solution during the developing process. This includes putting on your jewellery. In particular finger and toe rings and belly button rings.
  • Avoid any strenuous exercise immediately after your spray tan.
  • Do not apply any moisturisers or deodorant until after your first shower. You can apply talcum powder to perspiration areas such as armpits, behind knees, behind neck and under breasts to prevent sweating. Talcum powder will not affect the spray tan.
  • If you are getting into a car with leather seats on a hot day it is recommended to sit on a towel as leather promotes sweating. Best to wrap a hand towel around your seatbelt too, to prevent rubbing across your chest area.
  • Do not shower/bathe/swim or get wet for at least 5 hours as this can remove some of the tanning solution before it has had a chance to fully develop and can cause streaks. Try to wait 8 hours for full development.
  • When you do shower after your spray tan, you may notice some brown staining in the water. Do not panic! Your tan is not washing off!!! This is just the bronzer (which is a colour guide for the technician) washing off revealing your tanned skin underneath. Pay extra attention to areas between the toes, elbows, knees, ankles and under the arms and breasts.
  • Gently pat your skin dry after contact with water.
  • Avoid soaking in the bath as this encourages the sloughing off of dead skin cells which will increase the fading of your spray tan.
  • Avoid swimming pools as chlorine will increase the fading of the spray tan.
  • Avoid harsh soaps which can affect the tan. Bar soaps, even moisturising ones can be harsh on the skin and a spray tan. We recommend QV wash which is ph balanced and is available in the salon for purchase. Soaps with higher ph levels will accelerate the fading process.
  • If you plan to sleep with your spray tan before showering for the first time, do not wear satin sleepwear or sleep on satin sheets as this will promote sweating.
  • Avoid moisturisers or products that contain Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acids or Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulphate, these products increase exfoliation and accelerate the fading process.
  • Avoid shaving or waxing following your spray tan as this process will remove the very top layer of your skin thus removing the tan in that area. If you need to shave, use a fresh blade and shaving cream to avoid scratching your skin.
  • Moisturise every day (preferably twice) with a hydrating lotion in order to keep your skin and tan in tip top condition.
  • As your tan fades, you will notice the drier areas of your body will fade more unevenly. Start to gently exfoliate your skin with a mitt/lotion. Best done while your skin is moist in the shower to avoid scratching your tan and irritating your skin.
  • Remember to wear a protective sunscreen when outdoors.
ALWAYS remember that your Sol Tan Spraytan Salon staff are here to help and we look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!
